Default What to look for when buying a used Harley?

Hi guys,

My name is Mike and I'm brand new to the forum as well as a brand new rider. I've never owned a Harley but I'm in the process of looking for one.

I want to go for a 2000-2005 Sportster as my first bike and I was wondering if you guys could give me tips when purchasing one (ex. what to look for, leaks...). Thank you in advance for your help, I really appreciate it!

2000-2003 are solid mount, 2004-2005 are rubber mount. Rubber mount translates to a better ride (to some). 883 vs 1200, the 883 will cost you less, but will sell for less too. Opposite for the 1200
For the most part, they are bullet proof, but not idiot proof. If you know nothing about modifying or repairing a Harley, you are better off looking for one that is stock. Modifications done by incompotent individuals will lead to headaches in your future. Other than that, pick a color you like.

You might at least consider buying a cheap, lightweight bike to beat up while you learn about riding. Take the safety course.

While getting your certifications, finances and insurance in order, do your own due diligence so you thoroughly know what year/model you are searching for. Become knowledgeable about the specific bikes you seek. Use the "search" function to read, for yourself, the experiences and opinions of other riders.

Set realistic budgets that you can afford for a used bike and a reserve for maintenance, upgrades, protective apparel and accessories. Craigslist is your best resource. Buy a relatively local bike, preferably from the original owner who can provide all the manuals and keys, etc. Avoid highly modified bikes. Look for a clean, low-mileage, stock bike with clear title that no amateur has bubba'd. Pay the local dealer to do a pre-purchase inspection upon which the sale/purchase will depend. Renegotiate with the seller for the correction of any problems or issues that are found. If it passes this inspection, have the dealer continue with bringing all maintenance up to date. Replace tires that are older than 7 years. Replace battery if older than 4 years.

Expect to search for a few weeks or longer, if necessary, to find just the right bike/deal.
