Here's a good guide to use. CruzTools and WindZone offer tool sets for Harley. Go to each of their websites and copy down all of the tools that come in their kits. They list them. Then buy good quality tools from companies like Craftsman or Snap On. Quality counts! I have both wrenches and sockets of each. I also picked up Craftsman ratcheting box-end wrenches for tighter spaces. As was said make sure the torx set has the T27. I always try the T27 first because the T25 "seems" like it will fit but can strip the bolt head.

Then buy the best in/lb and ft/lb torque wrenches you can afford. Yes, regardless of those that claim they don't use them, use the proper torque wrench. A motorcycle jack is also nice to have.

I also have one of those head lights. Boy does that make a difference when you can point light where you need it.

Don't forget, duct tape does almost anything. Zip ties are essential too.

Needle nose pliers are also good to have. As are wire cutters. A rubber mallet is nice.

I probably forgot some stuff but always have a beer or two with you when working on the bike.

Whatever you know how to use to fix your bike. If you don't know how to use them or fix anything I'd suggest a cell phone and a credit card.

For just basic stuff I'd probably say the allen heads, the torx screwdriver and maybe a few spanners (clutch adjustment & exhaust tightening)
