Default RE: 883 or 1200

I can't comment on the 883, but I have a 1200. When I first got the bike it had scary power, but I was a new rider. Now it just has enough power. The throttle doesn't seem to end though. I've had it up to 100mph on the highway and it still had more. The only thing holding me back was me. At that point I had become a sail and felt i was going to fly off.

For a new rider the 883 would be much better. The only problem is it will probably only be much better for one to two weeks until the rider gets used to it and can move up to a 1200. I would buy the 1200. If you can, then maybe you would like to rent an 883 for a week or so to get some practice on it.

"Power" is the word that keeps getting mentioned... like I said, the 883 has lots of power... enough to beat many BT's off the line. Alternatively, the 1200 is probably the next fastest bike behind the V-Rod for stock harley's (considering power/weight ratio, etc). What you really need to determine is what type of riding does she plan on. If it's mostly for day trips, and around the city, then the 883 will be plenty fine. Remember, we're still taking about a bike that has almost 900cc's. There are many, many metric bikes that get along just fine with 750cc engines. I ride with lots of BT's and keep up just fine on the roads we travel. But like I said, if you're planning on being on the hiway at 70+ alot, or plan on many longer trips, then you should go for the 1200... or even a softail, as I believe they are easier to ride than the Sportster.
Also remember there are always mods that give any bike more power. The main things I would consider are; what style of HD does she like regardless of price? what budget are you working with? are you willing to buy a used bike?
Good luck... whatever you guys end up getting, I'm sure she'll love it!
