Default brake light problem

I have something major going on. My brake light isn't working. I know that it is not the light bulb and I know that my wires under my rear fender are good. I stripped the wires and ran a wire from my battery to the rear wire harness and the brake light lights up. We put a tester on the prongs of the socket and when i push the rear brake pedal the needle moves. When I push the front brake there is no power going to it. Will that cause both switches not to work? Does anyone have any suggestions? It is a 1995 harley davidson sportster 883

I just took a quick look and both switches are fed from the accessory fuse,so they should work separably.
