Your "needle jet" and "needle" are two different parts. If someone put a new "emulsion tube" in your carb while installing the kit, the "needle jet" (held in by the emulsion tube) could be installed incorrectly, it has been reported before.

Well, it should work. Don't give up, it's actually a one time investment in your bike, you could spend more money and get less in return, like on goofy accessories.

But, it appears you may have had a good setup already. It's not rocket science, look at the guys with the endless iterations of computer maps, now that's going big.

Ah.

I put a new emulsion tube in with the 180 jet. Only one way it would fit.

Guess Ill go back to stock. Worth a try, I suppose, and I learned a lot about the carb system, so its not a complete loss, right?

Agreed, today I'd just go with jets and (maybe) NOKK needle, but at least I did not spend the money on women and whiskey. Today I would just buy a 45/170 jet combo for cheap, and have some fun with the rest.

Also, my plugs look perfect, not rich at all.

Unnerstood - XL aficionados have come a long way in our understanding of what works and what doesn't - having information helps a bunch in avoiding the shadetree voodoo "wisdom" that seemed quite prevalent 15 years ago.

Hey guys, thanks for the help. I went to the dealer and got a 175 jet for $4. Put the bushing up on the cable wheel screw (just because it was there to begin with). Dropped the pin by one notch and the bike runs great now. Got some small backfires, but I think with some tinkering or throttle control I can solve that.

Again, thanks for all the help, I couldnt have done it without you!

Thanks, you made my day. That's what's great about this forum, its fun to try and figure stuff out on bikes. And you learn about your own as well.

Try turning the mixture screw out a bit. Mine's a bit more than 3 turns out, maybe 3.25 as I recall.

try raising the needle one groove, that may help the back firing, and (after driving the bike ot see if it is good) you might want to turn the idle mix screw out a 1/8 turn or so...remember when making adjustments, to do one at a time and drive it for a few miles to see if it is improved or worse ..if worse put things back and try something different...

Lowering the needle seems to be what fixed most his problem, from what he posted. Not sure you want to go the other way.
