In the fight between a bike/biker and a car, the car will always win. PAY MORE ATTENTION, use the SEE method, always expect the unexpected, always ride with an out! Learn from your mistakes and you sould live to ride another day! It's good to have an instant reaction to a situation. It's even better to avoid them!

I like to keep as much space between myself and the other guy as possible (whether on my Sporty or in a cage).... in your case I would've been checking the left lane (S-E-E) and merging over as soon as I noticed the SUV coming up on the right. Just in case he, you know, thought he owned the road or something.

Glad you're ok and lived to tell the tale......

Here's something that hasn't been mentioned yet and could have prevented the entire situation from ever happening. Lane choice and lane positioning.

Whenever you are on a 4-lane road (2 lanes in each direction) that has streets, driveways, parked cars, etc., the left portion of the left lane is the safest position as it provides both you and any inbound traffic, animals, pedestrians, etc., the greatest field of view and the greatest time/distance for reaction, when necessary. They will see you sooner, you will see them sooner, and the extra time/distance can make an otherwise close-call a non-event.

As you approach an intersection, moving slightly to the right provides the same benefits from potential left-turn hazards.

Bottom line is that lane choice and lane positioning can provide for some extra margin of safety for you.

Glad you're ok.

Lots of good advice here...2black1s on lane positioning is great advice.

My 2 cents-

I always slow down at intersections, does not matter if I have the right of way...I slow down and look.

Pretty sure that 70% or so of bike accidents occur at an intersection, so it may be irritating, but it may save my life too.
