You can use the 883 heads after the conversion but they don't perform like 1200 heads. You should replace the stock mufflers with some slip-ons ( Cycle Shack, V&H, Screamin Eagle), rejet the carb to 180/45 and a high flow breather...Screamin Eagle worked for me. With the 1200cc jugs and pistons with 883 gearing, your scoot will hall ***. The very first item you need to buy is an HD Service Manual for your bike, You can find conversion kits on ebay ( I used V-Twin) or you can go through some online stores. There will be other answers to your post giving you sites to go to. Most important....read the "Top end overhaul" in your service manual to give you an idea what your in for.
They have nice kits for sportsters . Never had the chance to do Äąt but heard from a lot of people that they r one of the best out there.
They have a 1250 kÄąt that works wÄąth stock heads . Good luck .
Did my '05 over a year ago with the H-D SE 1200 kit (new cylinders w/forged 10:1 pistons), and added the SE 1200 ignition module to control detonation. Kept the stock heads, but already had the SE intake, rejet, and SE II slip-ons. Increase in power is amazing and I've experienced zero problems. Original gearing was a bit low for my style of riding (lots of long highway trips), so I changed out the primary sprocket and chain to the 1200 version (different on '04 and later Sportsters). This substantially reduced the revs at highway speed and made all the gears more usable (doesn't rev out as quickly).
One thing to keep in mind is that, even more than is the case with the usual bits we change on our bikes, this is basically throw-away money when it comes to resale or trade-in. It still titles as an 883 (because of the VIN), which may be good from an insurance standpoint, but unless you can find a private buyer who wants what you've done, you'll still be looking at the resale value of an 883 (I'm now finding that out as I consider selling this one inorder to buy a new bike).
Planning on doing my 04 883C next winter, thanks for the link. As for resale, I have a 12yr. old boy that will get this bike when(IF) I get done with it, and I like the cheaper insurance. In this state, insurance prices suck hard compared to Avg. income levels.
