And excuse Charley. He's rude and acts like a know it all. Even though he does know it all, he is still rude.

$17 for an oil filter? I'd go to another dealer or order online next time. I do what it looks like a lot of others do, buy the filter and trans fluid at the dealer, the buy the 3 quarts of oil elsewhere. I use the Valvoline VR-1 in 20w50.

Buy a HD filter and a quart of primary fluid and then Buy 15w50 or 20w50 automotive oil...I know you are kinda stuck with prices in AK so you can also look at getting a WIX filter or Fram,

That part number (63731-99A) is for the wrong filter. That is the SuperPremium filter for the Twin Cams.

You want either 63796-77A (chrome) or 63805-80A (black).

No need to pay extra to have the HD logo on your oil container.

Wink

To clarify:
First thank all of you for all of your great advice.

What happened was....

I finally got my bike out of the dining room from the long Alaska winter.
I went tooling around town and while I was out, (It was a balmy 54 degrees..) I decided to check my oil.

The level was good but I noticed the oil was pretty crappy looking.

I always change my own oil in my Jeep.. buy Mobil 1 full synthetic at Walmart.. and a filter so I want to change my own oil in my Harley.

I went to the local Harley dealer to get pricing, a price quote on what I needed.(NOT LABOR, JUST THE OIL AND FILTER) THE DEALERSHIP WANTS LIKE $300.00 FOR A FLUIDS CHANGE... I am sure I am NOT going that route!

I have a Clymer repair manual for my 2006 xl1200 custom.. but was out so I just simply asked the parts department what FLUIDS I need to keep changed on my bike.

They printed out what I included with this post.

I almost fell over dead! $73.00 for THE OIL AND FILTER I NEED FOR an oil change? Hell, I ain't rich!

Any ways.. I just took that printout and took a photo with my cell phone and posted it here to ask advice.

Being in Alaska, if it gets up to 75 degrees that would be AMAZING, usual operating temps here is about 54-68 degrees in summer.

JUST TO BE CLEAR:

Mobile 1 20w-50 for engine oil?
Get the Harley filter and gear oil at the dealership?

If that is correct, that is what I will do.

Thank you all...
Yes, I agree.. I do all my own oil changes...

I am not an idiot, but I waited a lifetime to get my first Harley, I guess I am a little scared of screwing it up.. you may laugh.. but we do not have a lot of money.. so when I do things, I cannot afford to flub up and screw some thing up... ya know...

Thanks, it was Sunday and the regular parts guy was not there.. so I will verify when I go in again this next week to get the filter and primary oil.

Even the black filter is pricy!

Great advice but it gets like 30 BELOW ZERO up here.. and I would not be able to sleep at night knowing my BABY is outside in 30 below weather....

Only other option.. $50.00 a month to store it at the Harley dealership! I may have to do that.
