thanks I'll check where are the fuses located and does anyone have a wiring diagram I just got the bike and the previous owner said he checked all the fuses but I would like to double check
You might call your local HD Dealership and ask about a Manuel for the bike, they come in extremely useful for an array of repairs, if they don't have it check ebay..
It's the middle fuse next to the starter relay. I've been having issues with my Father's 2005 883 as well. I have a short somewhere either in the speedometer or the wires that come from it to the indicator lights on the bars.
The speedo uses the same fuse as the starter button, so eliminate a fuse error if the bike turns over. I opened up the speedo and disconnected the wires the other day after tracing the short to there. I then ran out of time and am contemplating a little journey later on to trace it further. The speedo powers up the neutral and oil lights as well as the ground points for the five indicator lights on the lower handlebar.
So now I'm faced with a short in the speedo or beyond that to the five indicators.
We are expecting severe weather this evening but I may attempt a road trip.
Good luck with yours.
Fri, 5/31: Found out today the bold info above is wrong. The wires come from the same harness, but branch off before the speedo. So now I have start, ignition and all lights. Just no speedometer/odometer. I'm going to try to disconnect the ignition wire that goes into the speedo and see what happens. Could've sold it today if it wasn't for that little problem.

I'm have the same problem with my sportster. Only difference is that my speedometer lights up and works fine when I use my back break. Any help would be appreciated.
