Okay, I've been asking all about Sportsters all day and you guys have been great (except I'm still waiting for some kind soul to tell me what a "RUB" is).
Now I'm starting to get serious about what I want and how I want it equipped.
My wife really wants a big tall sissy bar to make her feel safe when she's on the tail of the thing. Personally, I'm not really too wild about sissy bars. Does anybody make one that you can easily detach?
I have the detachable Harley backrest/docking hardwarefor those times my wife or youngest daughter wants to ride. Also it is great to hang a bag over the back for either day trips or overnighters. When I know there's no baggage involved, off comes the sissy bar and changes the look!
The only bad thing about the detachable is some accesories will not fit with the docking hardware. I like the detachable trick so much, when I get a Road King after the Sporty is paid off, I will get the detachable kit for it as well!
Good luck! You will dig the Sporty and so will your wife! If you haven't ridden in awhile, or heck if you have some free time and a few extra bucks, take a riders's course!
I also have a quick-detach sissybar with a luggage rack. Most of the time I ride with the solo seat on and no sissybar, but if the wife wants a ride I just pop on the sissybar and 2-up seatand off we go.With the luggage rack,we can carry a nice bag for overnight trips. When I first got my bike it had the rigid mount sissybar brackets. It was the first thing I changed.Buy the quick release. You'll love it.
I don't have the luggage rack, but I do have a detachable back rest that is great to hand a bag on for longer trips. I also have the quick detach windshield. It is great. I can take both of these things off in less than a minute to change the look of my bike totally.
I have the ridged sideplates, and I like the looks of the sissybar and back pad on my scooter. But thats why they make different types. So everyone can get what they want
The HD Quick Release sissybar is great. Do yourself a favor - add the detachable lock kit. That way someone who likes your sissbar as much as you wont be seeing how easily detachable it really is (from your bike).

I went with the mid-height detachable sissy bar setup and just added a tapered luggage rack to it. I use it to strap a bag or backpack to the bike for the workweek and the wife feels safer with the bar back there. I also changed out the seat for a Sundowner and I now havethe flexibility to interchange the seats/ sissy bar look in a few minutes. In some ways I prefer the look of the rigid plates, but the versatility of the detachable wins hands down!!
