Default Ironhead Oil

I am doing the final assembly on an ironhead project. I want to put to start it and see if things are together correctly. is it ok to use 20w50 walmart oil for now? I don't want to spend 8 bucks a quart on harley oil because i might be draining it out and taking it back apart. Is 20w50 oil the same for cars or bikes? I will change it later before riding the bike more than around the block. thanks Mark

If it were me, I'd run straight 50-weight, but that's a controversial topic. If you haven't already, check out THIS THREAD on XLForums for a nice write-up on oil changes for the Ironhead.

Mark, there are more oil experts where Harleys are concerned than there are grains of sand on the planet! So take great care when asking questions!!!!

Check your factory service manual. For modern Harleys we are told to use an oil for diesel engines, when 'approved' motor oil is not available. So by all means visit Walmart or other cheap outlets, but look for diesel 20W/50, that meets specifications CH-4, CI-4 and CJ-4.

If you are able to find some, there will be no need to throw it away, as it is to spec. Hope that helps!

Wallyworld 20w50 car oil is fine for a startup and a bit of running/test riding. I wouldn't ride the bike long term with it in there, though. In warmer weather, I'd run straight 50wt (or 60wt) Harley oil. In the winter, Harley 20w50. That's what I've used in my Ironhead for the past 23 years...
