Default Stripped Thread #$%&

Just finished installing my Road 6 Customs 12 Z Bars (Bad ***), While I was screwing the clutch cable into the primary it never tightened and began to just spin in place.towards the end. I am told that a heli coil will do the trick. Anyone know what thread size? and can I get away with doing it without taking off the primary. I will be careful and flush the primary when done.

PS the factory cable screwed back in and sorta tightened up.

Thanks,

Chad

If you heli-coil it you have to use one that matches the thread size on your cable

Umm, that's a fair amount of material to strip out. That doesn't have a high torque on it, specs are inch lb if I remember right. It has an o-ring (you want to check it, if there's any cracking, or real hard and stiff, it's gonna leak; my 883 is doing that right now) so it doesn't need to be gorilla tight to seal. I just go a little past snug, and use blue loctite. I wouldn't try putting a heli coil in on the bike. You might be able to do it, but if you did get some metal bits in there, it won't necessarily flush out the drain plug hole (definitely won't flush out the clutch cable hole, it's above the bottom of the case) and might end up restricting an oil passage. It's not hard to pull that cover, but you'll have to pull the gearshift linkage off the shaft and probably the foot peg, again, not difficult. And if you don't have one, get a torque wrench! It's something you'll use later, too. Those cover bolts are easily stripped, lots of guys have done it. Again, the torque value is just in inch lbs. I use blue loctite on those, too. When you pull the primary cover, a lockwasher and spring may pop off the clutch - that's not a problem to install later, just be aware and don't lose them. Hopefully you have a Harley manual, has good instructions and pictures for this. Here's a pic of mine this summer when I replaced the clutch plates. The front of the clutch is removed to show the riveted plate (Harley just had to put a weak link in the Sporty drive train, darn it) so your clutch view would be a little different, and will have the cam the cable attaches to on it.
