I was under the impression that even if it is gear, if you pull in the clutch lever, it should disengage.

It will, but with difficulty, as has been explained! It is much easier when in neutral, so select that instead. I don't believe your bike is anything other than very normal!

I always park my bike in neutral unless on a unlevel surface. Taught that way. As said before keep bike in neutral and no problems.

With only 1,700 miles I doubt it is the center spring plate. I would say you have gotten good advice already here. If you want to learn about the center spring plate, read this link:

Default Adjustment to the clutch

My clutch lets out late. Is there any way to adjust the clutch cable so that the clutch lets out earlier?
