Would these look good on my Iron???
Your "Can't match the perfection of the fat boy wheels with..." statement is purely a subjective one especially to the nut that's behind the wheel here, Jr. Space Cadet!
As for myself, and I am unanimous in this [LOL], I always found the fat boy wheels to be absolutely, positively, unequivocally, undeniably, and without a single doubt in the universe, the most borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr<snooze>inginginginging wheels eVAR!!! But if you want to put boring, I mean um, LOL, if you want to put them on your bike then by all means do so, it's YOUR bike!!
I like the wide tire/wide glide look too but if I wanted to have that kind of bike I would have started with a '48 or sumpthin' else and left the Iron be, but that's just me. I mean really...'tis like buying an Iron then doing a 1250 kit then raking it then putting on the wide glide kit then the fat wheels and white wall tires the springer seat the clip ons then oh where oh where does it end and why didn't I just start from scratch building this damn thing? Hahahahahahaha.
=8^)
Actually this is one of my mods in my imaginarymod list that I have. What I'd do is a little different but the same. Itinvolves the stock rear wheel of the Iron in the front and a fat boy or similartype of wheel in the back (the picture of the other wheels you uploaded looksnice).
Why would I do it that way? Well, because likemost of the guys said, the Iron wheels are gorgeous. The only thing they lackin my opinion is that they can't take a fatter tire. Although everybody lovestheir sportsters skinny and all, HD introduced the 48 and showed people thatmodern sportsters look bad *** with beefed up tyres. So now half of the guyswith any other sportster want their bike to look like a 48. I don't want it tolook like a 48, I want it with fat tyres (not white walls) and mags. The onlyway to maintain the Iron's look with fat tires is do it my way I think. XD
Cause the front wheel is what’s really visiblethe most. The rear not so much, so you could get away with installing someother mag wheel in the back that can handle the fatter tire safely and use yourstock rear wheel in the front with a wide-glide kit.
Now that’s another story, if I could install thestock rear wheel on a mid-glide that'll be better and better. Still maintainthe skinniness of the bike while having a wider tire upfront (what HD did withthe 48 but with laced wheels).
And you could machine the wheels to fit on a mid-glide,but is it safe to do so? I can't tell you. That’s why I'm the kind of guy whowould support people like you doing these kinds of mods so I could learn fromyour mistakes and I have to do less homework.
But what do I know?
Just my two fils...
Personally I don't care much for those wheels I would probably go for some Mammoth Wheels.
One thing I will caution you on with the front......weight. I went with a 16X3 mag up front for a look I was going for, I thought it looked great (green bike in pic below).
It induced a problem which took me couple of months to find. It had a little bit of a weave (not wobble) above about 40MPH. It felt like someone gave my front end a little shove every couple of seconds, not enough to make the bike lean or turn.......but enough to feel it. Handle bars were rock steady. I tried everything, wheel bearings, neck bearings and adjustment, rear wheel bearings, swingarm bearings, shock lengths and fork heights, swapped tires and even bought new tires.........nothing worked. The last thing I tried was to use the rear 16X3 spoked wheel from the 48.............everything else the same............fixed it. The only real difference? Weight. The mag wheel weighs (cant remember exactly) about 8 pounds more than the spoke wheel. The gyroscopic effect of that much weight on our sporty forks was too much.
So now it looks like this which I dont like as much cause it looks about the same as it did before I put the wide glide on it.
Now I also used a vintage tire, which weighs more and a tube which adds weight. If you use a modern tire and no tube it should be light enough not to cause you problems.
And in as much as "unique" is often used to describe what might be a collection of "junk" it is not necessarily a factor that all people out there look to strive for or accomplish. Many are happy with stock bikes, I see them ALL THE TIME and I'm sure you do too. As a matter of fact, I see MORE stock bikes then I do mod'd bikes. I'm often quite amused at the extent that some will go to though, just to be "different" or unique, often times getting negative attention rather than the desired result.
Alot of things amuse me here, but it especially amuses me when someone such as yourself posts something like "Would these look good on my Iron???" and then when someone has the ***** to say no, before you know it you can hear the panti liners tearing and Monistat 7 boxes opening in unison. I mean WTF. It seems that some people post these questions with the answer already in their mind, and they come here to get some kind of justification and/or "approval" for their choices from the masses here and when those choices don't meet with 100% approval from everyone, holy crap the panties they be a twistin'! Truth be told when it comes to decision making I gather the facts, look into my wallet, then make an informed decision. I mean really, who's bike is it anyway, mine or the HD discussion boards? If these are people who don't know enough to make a decision by themselves maybe they shouldn't own a bike and learn to crochet instead??
Sorry for ranting but I just get so sick and tired of the almost immediate commentary whenever someone posts a "should I?" question and I respond with a negative. It's just my opinion, they DID ask, and if it didn't align with theirs then what's the big deal and why are they asking if they're going to get all pissy in the first place? I wonder if these people have any idea of or would they even consider the fact that many people read their post and didn't even care enough to respond with either a negative OR a positive to their question? K-ripes.
I feel like I'm witnessing the castration of the Harley Davidson man here on an almost daily basis and I hope we can recover into the rough and tough bastards that we used to be instead of being overrun by this new generation of metrosexual panti liner wearin' loufa usin' pedicure getting bunch of freakin' sissy's who get all upset when someone doesn't care for someone's choice of motorcycle chingadero. These candya$$es should be off riding a Vespa while sipping a latte' instead of polluting the pages of this here website.
rant mode: oFF
Ok, I feel better now, LOL. Like I said earlier, but in less words, 'fat boy wheels aren't my thing but if you like them then by all means, do what pleases you
=8^)

+1 on that!
If these are people who don't know enough to make a decision by themselves maybe they shouldn't own a bike and learn to crochet instead??
But sometimes it might be nice to get other people's opinions too, right!? Everybody might not be as confident as you. But of course if one asks the question one must also be able to take the fact that someone thinks differently!
But what's wrong with a Vespa and a latte!? Lol
Sorry chgofirefighter if wrecked your thread!
It has to be a Vespa and an Espresso!!
