How do you know...............
Ok, so with these vtwin air cooled engines, how do you know when your engine is running hot or overheating. Just curious because mine felt kinda hot today. Althought it was about 70 out, just felt the heat in my seat. Possibly nothing to it, but I would like to know what happens when the motor does over heat?
That is nothing. You seat and pants will always get warm.70 is way cool. You will know when she gets hot. Over 105 degree days mine will get hot. You will hear it pinging/knocking when you give it gas as she gets hot. Even hotter it will run very poor and you may have to shut it down....you will know when it gets hot!
That happened to me last year, Kristin was riding at very low speeds on a very hot day in a parking lot. Started running like crap, shut it down and wouldn't start for about 20 min or so.

It was like 95 deg on a black top parking lot, she was learning how to ride I was wanting a beer. I can't tell you how hot it was, but she was bitten by the Harley bug and she was there to ride that bike. I bet she never got it over 20 MPH, no air moving over the fins on the engine and it over heated. Started pinging and running like crap, shut it down right away and thought the best way to cool it down would be to take it down the street at 50 to 60 mph, but it wouldn't start. After about 20 min or so it started and went for that beer.
I don't think it hurt the motor, it's ran great.
