Hello guys,
I have just purchased a 96 1200 Sportster because I'm considering Route66 (on a hire bike) and want to get used to a Harley. I own two Triumph's
Unfortunately after a week, the rear brake light and right flasher don't operate. The speedometer seem to be stuck at 20mph but zeros when the ignition is switched off. I have checked the bulbs and circuit breakers with a multimeter and are ok.
Thanks in advance,
HaggisHead
Does the bike have stock handlebars & grips? Seems like you could have a pinched wire or grounding issue... Take a close look at the wiring harnesses too...look for corroded connections and frayed wires.
It sounds like you might have multiple unrelated problems. Speedometer and turn signal could be related to a low voltage situation. Check your battery and charging system. The speedometer and turn signal relay are both electronic. The rear brake is probably a bad switch as John suggested. You can test it easily with a multimeter.

Thanks for your thoughts!
The battery is new and starts the engine no probs.
Its only the right indicator front and back that are not operating. Please be gentle with me I'm a virgin (two weeks) on Harleys. I've had a quick look....but where is the brake light switch?
