The Dark SideFor those members running "Car Tires" on their scoots. This is for their discussion only and not a place for "non dark siders" to mouth off about their negative opinions of this idea!
I ride an 07 fatboy and have never been happy about getting only around 8500 miles out of the stock Dunlop rear tire. I went to the Michelin RC II and only got marginally better milage. I have decided to go dark on this bike. Any suggestions as to brand? The MC tire size on this bike is 200 55/17.
I looked on tirerack.com and there are several to pick from. I'm not familiar with 17" but was surprised at the prices. My G-Max 195/55/16 was under $100!
I read a couple of the reviews and so I would read all of them and make a decision.
I saw the Pirelli that is a run flat for $205... That's the one I would try first but you make the decision.
Have you been on the dark side before? If not I would read thru some of the threads and see what others use and what pressure they run. Tire pressure plays an important part in tuning it properly so experiment.... a lot!
After reading a LOT of reviews and talking to a riding buddy thathas been dark for almost a year now, I went with a Falken Zeix 612+ in size 205/50/17. No fitment issues and on advice ran it at 32psi for almost 2k miles to help round the edges. I have since increased the pressure to 36psi and will increase in increments of 2 psi to I find the "sweet spot" for my riding style. So far I am LOVING IT!! More updates to follow.
Thanks for the input from all who replied.

As of now I have almost 45k miles on my 07 Fatboy, I went dark with roughly 32k on it and the only issues I have encountered to date are belt issues. Drive belt that is. The original belt stripped ALL the teeth off so my buddy and I replaced it with one purchased from Drag specialties for my model year. It was a lot of work but we got the job done right. The new belt lasted only a couple of months before snapping into at 3am on an interstate on ramp.
