When computers crash it is an excellent time to Upgrade to a Mac so you do not have to worry about it anymore.
+1 - totally agree, but you still need an external drive for back up and recovery. Just a smart thing to do, even if you use a windows pc. If you lost your logic/mother board, your data can probably be retrieved from the old hard drive.
Hmmm, all these computers going down and people loosing data, but I don't recall seeing a backup hard drive on anyone's Xmas Wish List.
I already have one. A 1 TB Western Digital. Bob got me to get one a while back. It is a great investment. It was only about 150.00. Well worth the money.
Its a separate peice of hardware that stores all your current info onto the 2nd hard drive. In case you lose your pooter, all the info can be transferred from the external (separate peice) drive onto your brand new pooter!
Most important thing I have are all my family photos, I would really hate to lose them. There is also the (help me out here charley) websites that will store your info on their own server for a monthly fee. But thats like leasing a car..who does that anymore?! Hmm, wonder when HD will come out with a leasing plan!
Yep, everyone should have a portable/external USB Hard Drive in the range of 500GB - 1TB. These are available for under $100.00. Some of these drives are specifically made for backing up your "data" files, like documents, photos, etc. and all it takes is the push of a button on the front of the drive. Better yet, IMO, is the backup drive and a copy of Norton Ghost software ($35.00). Ghost can be setup to automatically backup your "Entire" system. That means all data, programs and the operating system. In the event of a complete loss of your hard drive, the entire system can be effortlessly restored, in typically an hour or two.
My entire system is automatically backed up every night while I sleep.

That was a wise decision. The important question now is, how long has it been since you actually used it to backup your current data?
