I tend to wave more now than I did in the past and waving in general seems more common in my parts nowadays. Back then, it seemed more brand specific to me.

Try an informal "keep it to your self" test. Use different waves during your ride. I've found about half the time the reply is the same wave you used. We have a guy in our group that waves at bicycles and surprisingly they wave back..

The guy that does the point down wave is the same fella who blips the throttle at a red light. All the while looking around with the dreaded snarl on his face seeing if anyone notices him.
