I think I heard my Pop talk about it. Was that hte one that had (excuse my lack of incorrect terminology) a 5 speed tranny but then had 3 ranges so you used gears 1-5 in range 1, then back down to 1st but also shifted into range 2 and so on?
As my Pop told the story, when learning to shift one some guys would have to bend down to see what they were doing and it would appear that no one was driving.
If that is not the same thing, then you got a free story about my Pop.

Ken knows more than I but ya had two shifters. A tranny and a mid range box. Had to fix a few that would stick in 2 gears at once with a new guy drivin it.
