You're contempt of your FIL is pretty open and justified it appears. I imagine this also may create some friction at home (?).
Is there any way you can come to better place on this for your own sanity? Resentments and continual disappointments will take a lot of your energy, and will drag you down. They seem to fail our "expectations" 100% of the time.
Mending a fence with him may be asking too much, but for your own sake, maybe you can let some of it go (?). To your wife he will always be Daddy, even if he's the scourge of the earth, and you'll never change him.
I'm not suggesting you look at it for his benefit or for your wife's benefit, but for your own piece of mind.

Back then, I think you could buy an XLCH for about $1900 bucks. It was the least expensive bike Harley offered and amounted to about 5 months wages for the average Joe.
