The plastic containors have a built in pour spout, cheaper to make and can be sealed (capped) off to keep the oil from being contaminated.

Good question. If oil is in such short supply and therfore so exspensive why not go back to cardboard cans?

I have also thought about that on occasion too. I have also wondered about why they stopped putting soda in glass bottles, too. I always thought it tasted much better in glass than plastic. I also used to make a living selling soda bottles when I was a kid.
