I know I'VE never felt more enlightened...

I mean ALL those other helmets threads were just BS compared to this riveting, eloquent finale...

For every motorcyclist killed by head trauma 100 are killed in autos by head trauma. Maybe helmets for cages? I've been down many times without a helmet, Lucky? maybe. But I know for sure I have avoided many accidents by the extra vision afforded by not wearing a helmet.

I spent the 10 minutes after he wrecked, laying on the highway talking to my friend even tho I knew he was out. The feeling of helplessness was overwhelming, watching my friend bleeding and waiting for the ambulance to get there. He was doing about 25 MPH when he hit the curb. My point here is, for all of you that feel it's some inconvenience to wear a helmet, ride with your local first aid squad when they get called to pick up a biker that hit his head. Get up close to the patient, look into his eyes for a sign of life. Follow the stream of blood that ran down the road. Then if you can't use logic to see why you should ride with an approved helmit, contact your local funeral home. If riding with a helmet is bothersome, pick out a comfortable casket. You have as much protection with novelty helmets as you do with a baseball cap.,,

Been there got the t-shirt, worked full time on a bus for six years for two agencies plus a volly VFD, still work on a bus PT

I still firmly believe in freedom of choice

You have avoided being hit from behind because of not wearing a helmet? How is that possible? The only extra vision afforded someone not wearing a helmet, at least one that fits correctly, is directly behind them. That and the way a FF helmet prevents a rider from seeing his gas tank.

Seriously, I don't care if anyone wears a helmet or not. But there are people here looking for advice, and personal experiences, with which they can make a 'freedom of choice' decision.

They shouldn't have to consider such nonsense as "extra vision afforded by not wearing a helmet", weight of a helmet, loss of hearing, breaking their neck in the event of a crash, etc..

Have you ever worn a full face helmet? Only an idiot or someone who hasn't ridden much would make such a stupid statement. Anyone with any sense at all knows helmets do to some degree limit full vision. and as to your last part. My only son was killed on his Buell 10 years ago wearing a high doller full face helmet when his neck was broken and spinal cord severed. Get some real facts before you open your pie hole.

I'm sorry for your loss of your son, so I understand your grief caused a response that wasn't very nice. I have ridden, pretty much daily year around, since 7/68. And I have been wearing full face helmets since 7/71. I will post again, in case anyone is undecided, a helmet does not limit full vision. Thinking otherwise makes as much sense as thinking that wearing a jacket inhibits arm movement enough to be dangerous.

While wearing mine, if I move my eyes as far left as I can I can barely see the left edge of my helmet. If I move my eyes as far right as I can, I can barely see the right edge of my helmet. But only one edge, barely, at a time. Since we don't have eyes in the back of our heads, the only real restiction is the inability to see the gas tank without tilting my head forward. Of course since you don't wear a helmet, you really don't understand this.

None of my FF helmets have been 'high dollar', and I have crashed a few times. On the street once and many times off road. I never broken my neck or severed my spinal cord. But I did receive a basilar skull fracture and brain stem injuries at the end of my last desert race on 3/23/75. So wearing helmets doesn't make a rider totally safe.

I'm sorry about your son, but I can quote more facts about riding, racing, crashing, etc. that most people will ever have experience enough to understand. And as I age, my blood sugar is reaching a level that doesn't allow me to have pie anymore.

Ron

Man, I'd hate it if I couldn't have pie, I just ran a test. with no helmet I had my wife move a ping pong ball two feet on each side of my head starting where I could'nt see them. At 110 degrees with eyes straight ahead I picked up the *****. With my full face helmet I couldn't pick them up untill they were at 85 degrees . A loss of vision of 25 degrees. Try it yourself.
