There were actually 3 Davidsons and only one Harley, not that that should make a difference to the answer:

Dude...everybody is phonetically lazy and we shorten everything:

Harley-Davidson becomes Harley or even HD
Chevrolet becomes Chevy
Sears & Robuck becomes Sears
Montgomery Ward & Co. becomes Ward's
International Harvester becomes IH
Volkswagon becomes VW
Oldsmobile becomes Olds
Levi Strauss & Co. becomes Levi's
Mercedes Benz can go either way.
Aston Marten becomes Aston
Woodward & Loothrup became Woodies
Jack Daniels becomes JD
Hewlett Packard, General Electric, Bavarian Motor Works, Rolls Royce, and the list goes on.
