I'm collecting parts for changing my fuel filter. Threads here report shell problems and so I also will do the shell. Threads also suggest that the top plate may be the culprit in shell failures. I'd like to get guidance to all of this in one thread.
For a 2009 FL:
(1) Are there issues with the top plate and should the original version be changed?
(2) Can someone please provide the P/Ns for fuel filter, shell & top plate? Is there a kit?

The part number is: 75069-08C. I replaced the whole top plate unit when I did mine. The one benefit to the top plate replacement is that it has a better filler neck. Much easier to top off the tank. Kutter has it for $114.00 shipped. http://www.kutterharleyonline.com/ha...tank-75069-08c
I change the fuel filter on my 2009 FLHCU every 25 K. Only change filter and O ring. Now at 79K and no problems. The Cam Ring tool makes it a simple task.
Before I dropped $114+ I'd find out if it affected your model. I know my friends 08 Classic had the problem but was replaced on a recall.
I know my '09 FLTR had a defective filter canister because it failed, I almost didn't make it back to the house. I knew some other '09 FL owners that had the same problems. I don't think they did a recall, at least not to my knowledge, but changing the whole top plate was worth the money and I paid list plus tax for it.
This is a picture of the broken canister and the heavier duty replacement. The '08's had the 75069-08 version, the 09's were suppose to have the 75069-08A version, the '10's had the 75069-08B version, and the '12's came with a 75069-08C which is the current version available. I would say that there was still a problem with the A & B versions of some sort or there wouldn't be a C version, the MOCO usually doesn't just replace things that don't need replacing unless it saves them money.
You may want to check which version you have in your bike jefla before you change it out, but if the canister looks like the one on the left, change it.

This issue is only with the center fill models (SG, RG ) is this right?
Hey TUCCI, how you doin'? I don't think you will have anything to worry about with the '11 model, but it does use the same filter canister (shell) as the other FL's use. The top plate just doesn't have a filler hole in it. I think what may have happened is that some of the '09's were fitted with the 75069-08 top plates. I don't know this for sure, but the part number that is listed for the '09's has the beefed up filter shell.
Thank you all. I considered waiting until I had the bike apart before ordering the kit, but that's more down time than I want. More importantly, only -08C is listed for 2009 in current parts lists I've seen, and I am comforted by going with a redesigned unit.
