Starting to look at battery tenders for the winter. There's so many different 'flavors' (750mA, 800mA, 1.25 amp, 5 amp and that's just on the HD website). I'm definitely out of my element when it comes to understanding what size to get for my FLHTK. I am assuming that the larger the amperage, the faster the charge, but I could be totally wrong.
Any advice?
Thanks!
first charger I got from Harley in 2006 lasted until January of this year. That's pretty good IMO. When I bought it, it was something like $99. Now they're $39. That's my choice and all you need.
I have been using Battery Tender brand for years as well as a 2 amp Schumacher. All have worked well. This year I bought a CTEK battery charger/maintainer because I have read so much good info about them. The are designed in Switzerland but, currently, built in China. They are supplied to BMW, Maserati, Lamborghini, Porsche, Audi, etc...I got the Multi US 3300. Works on cars, vintage cars, bikes, watercraft, quads, on and on. It can also charge in the dead of winter in a cold garage.
Time will tell if the results are good or not. I paid $55.00 from Amazon. I have a power outlet on the handlebars of my dyna that is wired straight to the battery, so I got a plug in for that outlet that charges the battery. No getting near the hot pipes any more.
is it for a lead acid/lead acid maintenance free, AGM, or Gel Cell?
I would look at the current and rate for the battery I have to make a choice.
You can use the standard Battery Tender on a lead acid or AGM, you need to order a special one for gel cells. Both my bikes had/have AGM, boat cranking battery is lead acid, tender and tender Jr. Worked fine on them. Got 8 seasons on the Ricer battery, and 10 years out of the boat one.
I also use the Tender Jr. I just swap it from vehicle to vehicle every week or so.
I have leads on my 2 tractors, the 4 wheeler, 3 cars, and 3 bikes.
The once a week transfer keeps them all up to par.
Harley brand battery tender jr 750 ma purchased 2003. Used every winter since. Eleven year old bike and only replaced the battery once after 6 years. Battery was still going strong but did not want to push it. Great little charger.
