Default tourpak vs touring luggage bags

I'm into early planning for a cross-country ride in '07. Hoepefully, my Hertiage will sell soon and I plan on getting a RG. I love the tour pak but my practical side says that I may get more stuff in a tour bag plus it comes off so easy and could be wheeled into a room each night. I already have a smaller bag that will set up on the rider seat. For everyday kind of riding the tourpak is nice to drop your helmet in. I ride with a shorty in the summer and full helmet when it's cooler. I'd appreciate hearing from any who've thought through something similar or from any with their $.02 worth.

pirate,

i have HD luggage that fits in my saddlebags and tour pak....my wife and i took a trip this summer and packed enough clothes for both of us for 6 days and we also strapped a soft bag to the tour pak....that had all of HER toiletries including her f'n hairdryer. get the HD luggage that fits in the saddlebags and tour pack they are durable and you can fit plenty in them and when you get to your stop for the night they just pull out and carry into the hotel/motel/or campsite.

I second what SE said....

We went on a long weekend trip last week and I added the tour pak before we left. I had also ordered the drop in luggage bags for the saddlebags and tour pak. Along with this I also installed quick removable saddlebags on the wifes bike. I gotta tell you we had plenty of room to carry everything including both of our full leather gear. What was REALLY nice was being able to just pull the luggage bags out of my saddles and tour pak and carry them into the hotel room. No multiple trips or juggling act required.

I prefer the tourpack because like you said the T bag does come off easy and you might end up loosing it when you stop some where for food or such (yes I'm slightly paranoid [sm=insomnia.gif] but that doesn't mean there aren't scumbags out there). Also I prefer the hard mount over the quick detach because they all use a generic key and people that steal bikes/bike stuff im sure know this.
