just received my new compensator from Kutter HD..installation sheet says use drive locking tool to tighten Torx bolt.read somewhere to hold nut with large wrench for proper tightening.should I follow installation instructions?
also should I add red loctite to Torx bolt, it already have some stuff on the threads.can't tell what it is.
You mention two things you've heard about, but what about following the instructions that came with it?! The bolt has suitable thread locking compound on it. From my own bitter experience make sure you screw it in and torque it straight away, otherwise that stuff on the thread will bond and you will have a fight on your hands to budge it! Screws in H-D kits routinely come with pre-applied thread locking compound if it is necessary. Loctite or similar will only be necessary if you remove and refit the screw.
Hoping I'd get some good advice from some that have done this install with the newest comp. Yes,following installation procedures is the best way to do it.
But whats the purpose of the nut on the compensator?
Got one sitting here ready to install on my bike too. Probably tomorrow. You got a T-70 socket? If not you better get one. I think I'll follow the instructions. Will this comp last longer? Dunno. I'm adding a Compensaver as well from GMR Performance.
Did your comp come with the needle bearing washer and two skinny washers? It seems mine did not and I am not sure if I am missing parts. Parts number 7 and 8 on the diagram.

yes the needle brg is part of the new unit, just put one in mine (3rd one!) also you get the little plastic tray to direct oil onto that spot with the 60.00 elephant snot! hope this one lasts more that 20k.

Found it. It and the two washers were on the sprocket retainer. My mechanic here at the shop had yet to lay everything out and was looking around telling me they were not there. Regardless, with the Compensaver I am using which oils the internals of the ramps and such much better than just the Harley setup you do not use those pieces but you use a special washer they include with the kit which helps reduce the rattle that is inherent of this design.
With the Compensaver installed you have a much better chance of having this item get more oil which will reduce wear on these parts. Fretting on the inner sleeve is still going to happen but not to the same extent. Someone has taken the time to engineer a part that will actually address part of the issue and to them my hat is off. http://gmrperformance.com/products/compensaver/

Yes,I do have the T70 socket and yes I did get that thrust bearing and two thrust washers...you must be missing parts.
I have installed one and yes, you need to use the large wrench, or crescent wrench, to hold the large nut and tighten the Torx nut. Otherwise the center turns and will make it pretty much impossible to get it torqued. No idea why the directions say what they do. I used some blue loctite on the bolt in addition to what is on there.

A little off topic but if your installing this in your 2007 and its the first time I hope you bought the rotor as well? I've used a large wrench for all four of the comps I had to remove or install in my 2010.
