Default Cam plate will not seat flush

I am having a problem getting the cam plate to fit flush against the case. I pulled it to replace cams and when I went to put it back together it goes in but stops about 1/4" from the case. I have done a few of these and never had this problem. Anyone have any ideas what could be hitting? I went as far as taking it back apart and removing the cams then trying to put the plate in by itself, but still had the same problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Is anything keeping the oil pump from seating on the back side?

Is the oil pump seating in the oring? I had to wiggle my oil pump to get it to seat.

Make sure you still don't have the old oil pump o ring still in the case and trying to seat the oil pump back in with another o ring on it, in effect doubling the o rings.

Just turn the wheel (engine) a bit back or forth, it'll go

Thanks for the suggestions. It was the oil pump. I didn't mess with it taking off the plate but had to loosen it and wiggle the plate to get it to seat. You learn something everyday!

Make sure you use a new o-ring on the pump to case. There have been cases of sumping seen here when an old o-ring was used.

I’m having trouble getting the plate flush and my gap appears to be the thickness of the oil ring. It’s not until I remove the oil ring that the cam plate seats flush. Should I tighten the plate down with the new ring on for a little while to “seat” it and then resume my installation (checking gear spacing, etc.) or try loosening the oil pump as the OP did first?

DO NOT do what you are suggesting! You will end up a destroyed cam plate and or threads pulled out of the case!
Take it apart and figure out what is keeping it from fitting together properly!
It should go together with very little resistance.
Report back as to what you find.

Sounds like the same issue I had. I think your answer is in the older posts below. I had my wife push against the plate while I spun the rear wheel. Fell right into place.
