The ones I've seen invariably used unburned gasoline, not propane. Put the spark plug in the exhaust and have the switch both fire that plug and kill one of the engines plugs so that cylinder runs rich and burned. The gasses then get ignited in the tailpipe.
Most tend to be underwhelming. Those that are impressive can create some entertaining burnback problems on the tail of the vehicle, especially when rolling off the throttle.
