gut the cat?
The cat has got to go either from new pipes or removal. Only issue would be emissions problem, if your state regulates. Otherwise your engine will run cooler, your mileage will improve and the bike will sound better.
Removing the Cat will not make your engine run cooler nor will it have any notable effect on your mileage. It will make the area of the header pipe where it was located dramatically cooler but the engine temp will be the same.
Most are happy with just getting rid of the burning hot cat.
One thing to keep in mind is not only does the cat increase ex and engine temp in some cases its just as much the extreem lean fuel mapping the bikes got that also adds to issues with increased exhaust & engine heat.
But an easy fix for those issues post removing cat and or adding pipes and maybe better breathing air cleaner would be Nightriider's
Xied's or Vied's or RC Componanats XCellerator fuel management system neither of which require any additional mapping or expensive dyno tuning time, ect, bolt on,plug in, & go!
Either of those systems will fix the extreem lean cond ,but the go about doing that using 2 totally different approaches ,check them out to see the difference in design.
The cheaper of 2 systems should cover stage 1 type mods (cat removed-slipons-perf aircleaner) but it's really meant for hot setups with more compression, perf cams and better breathing heads etc.
The 2nd much more expensive system should handle that + mods like aftermarket cams & heads etc as long as you have injectors that have enough capacity to properly supply the additional power adders but to be safe ask the mfg about that if you plan to go that route now or in the future.
BTW,if you want to keep your original head pipes with cat in tact you can buy stock original headpips that have had the cat removed on ebay for $100-150 on avg, cost me $100 for stock head pipes with cat removed on ebay for my 09 FLHTCU .

As already stated, the only downside would be a change or stricter enforcement of emissions regs. For this reason, I opted to buy an already decatted pipe and kept my original intact. My decatted header made a huge difference in reducing right side heat and seemed to make my exhaust just a little louder.
It is a great thing to do.
I recommend getting rid of the cat (I went with Power Duals) as a part of a performance upgrade package to maximize what you have at that time to work with.
