I use carb or brake cleaner sprayed onto a pad of 4/0 steel wool. Works every time any gunk is burned onto the pipes with no scratches on the chrome.

Colonel Brassy works quite well. I've had to remove that kind of thing twice from my pipes. Once it was nylon from a pair of work pants and the second time was from a cheap rain suit. I always have a bottle on hand. Good stuff.

Scrape it off with a penny or a nickel, both are softer metal than your pipes....will not scratch. Used this trick often

I had the same issue with some damn FrogToggs melting on my pipe. Here's what I would never recommend because the chromium layer is very very thin and can be easily scarred and compromised. Ask me how I know.

-No scraping with a metallic object...regardless of what it's made of
-No steel wood either, regardless of how fine

Use non-abrasive chrome polish and soft cloth/microfiber or maybe try the oven cleaner approach. It will take some effort, but don't get in a hurry. Because if you do get in a hurry and screw up the chrome, it's usually permanent. Consider trying your polish in a non-conspicuous place just to practice and see if it's hurting the chrome at all...then move to the melted **** and go to work.

Run the bike until the pipes are nice and hot, then get a wet 100% terry cloth towel and wrap it around a block of wood and rub the melted plastic off. It takes some rubbing, but I have done this a couple of times without leaving any scratches on the chrome.

Oven cleaner is a bad idea. So is scraping. I've heard about a ball of foil. Nope, leaves scratches.

Harley makes some boot mark remover - every dealership carries it. A couple of applications, per the instructions, and Mother's chrome polish. Problem solved.
