Default 2009 RK cruise control/brake light problem

Today on my way to work I tried to use the cruise control and it didn't activate. I checked the main brake light and the airwing tail/brake light on the tour pack and neither light up when I hit the brakes, although the tail light function is fine. The tail lamp bulb and the brake fuse both checked out OK. Also, the engine fault light lit up both on my way to work and home, but restarting the bike turned it off.

Any suggestions on things to check before I go to the dealer?

It sounds like a brake switch.

you could be riding around with your brake lights on all the time...this will happen if the brake light switch is broken.

rear brake light switch was subject to a recall on your model- check HD website or dealer

front brake light switch will break if the rider tries to loosen the controls without using a shim as detailed in teh manual.

3rd choice brake light relay could be bad- this uses the same relay as other functions on the bike, so easy to pull another relay and swap it in to test

Thanks for the replies.

I had a look this AM and it seems that my brake lights are on all the time, which explains why the cruise doesn't work. I printed out the brake switch recall notice and will swing by my dealer this morning.

you can do a test at home by unplugging teh rear brake light switch...

if the brake lights go out...then it's the switch.

replacement requires the digital technician if you have abs...the brake system will need to be bled.

if that is the case explain to the service writer to check and see if there are amy updates for you bike, such as ABS, throttle control or EFI maps.
which they can easily do at the same time
