o-ring clutch cover

you can clean out the groove with a qtip, wipe down the o ring.
try using axle grease to hold the ring in place while you get it into position.
if it just won't go...then off to the dealer...
if the seal has a flatspot, put that at the top. The primary isn;t under any pressure.
I usually get a couple of uses out of the o ring, depends on how tightly torqued
get a spare, get a primary gasket and O rings for you drain plugs at the same time.
always handy to have common seals and lubes handy
for terminology, that is the clutch inspection or "derby" cover
seals may swell subjected to petro-chemical products. not unusual

The first time I changed lube in the primary I got the whole business (new gasket and a set of O rings). The gasket from the factory looked new and I saw no reason to replace it. Clean the derby cover groove with any degreaser you have (carb cleaner, brake cleaner, laquer thinner etc. and wipe off the gasket. Mine also was just a bit too long but with the gasket dry and the groove degreased, the little fat spots would "stick" in the groove well enough that the gasket could be persuaded to stay in the groove. Same gasket now for 70,000 miles and no leaks. I still have my first new spare and suspect I might need it some day.

I re-use that one, but always replace the orings on the plugs.
I've never had a problem putting one back in....

I always replace mine with the flat disk. Just don't like having to worry with that aggravating o-ring. You could also put that o-ring in the freezer while your doing your oil change and it'll fit fine when your ready for it.
