My buddy is on a budget right now. We just want to make sure he doesn't have a failure which was smart because the inner shoe was all but gone when I pulled the cam plate. We found about 4 chunks of it and the chain was riding on the shoe pin. Funny thing is there was no noise or any indication the shoe was damaged. I bought the bike as a repo from a bank for him so with no knowledge of the service history I knew it was a good idea to take a look before he started riding it.

The bike has 45,000 miles so these were either original or the second set.

My rule of thumb is to not even CARE about what the stock INA caged bearings look like. If I'm pulling the cam cover and cam plate, the bearings are getting replaced with the KOYO/Torrington type. Takes only 10-15 minutes of extra time with the right tools (and I'm slow), but provides a lot better peace-of-mind afterwards.

+1 on this. Later bikes have the cams that aren't pressed in.
