H-D Smooth Push Button Fuel Door Rattle/Buzz: Solution?
I have the infamous smooth push button fuel door buzz/rattle that shows up frequently here in the forum. Not much of a solution to fix it other than go back to the OEM lock or the H-D Push-Button Fuel Tank Console Door Release-53842-00C, which looks similar to the OEM lock, except this one can be opened by-way of a push button and can be locked. Doesn't look as good as the Smooth Push Button, but does anyway have one and could tell me if it rattles/buzzes?
I used a tooth pick to push a little dab of grease down into the locking mechanism on mine.
Not so much that you make a mess, just a small dab.
It is enough to keep it from vibrating and causing that "buzzing" sound.
The rattle is coming from the very top, or button, of the lock; did you put the grease under the chrome cap, or are you saying the actual lock mechanism?

I did both. Down into the gap around the button, and also the locking tab.
Anyplace that I could tell would rattle.
Take the cap off and shake it, and you can hear the rattles.
Like I said, it doesn't take much. I didn't want the stuff "oozing" back out in the heat of summer.
You guys may have just answered my issue and I thank you in advance. I have a new 15 SGS and have been hearing a metallic ticking near the faring for about 200 miles. I first thought it was the zipper on my jacket sleeves so I rode with it off and that wasn't it. I took it to the dealership yesterday and they rode it and heard the same noise near the front end. Its only happening between 2100-2500 RPMs while in motion. Doesn't happen while sitting still. They re-routed wires under my faring and then said it was loose pipe clamps. I accepted their fix and rode home. I could still hear the noise and now I think it may be solved. Thanks!!

Very easy to find out if that cap is your issue or not.
Next time you hear the noise, just put a little pressure on the fuel door with your hand.
If the noise stops, that is what it is.
I had that noise on the fuel cover on the 2014 SGS. All I did was adjust it and retighten the nut and it went away. Replaced my lock on my 2007 with this new push button and same issue, just a adjustment and lock tight the nut and problem gone.
