now that I own a 2010 Ultra classic
I don't have 2 nickels to rub together.
This bike has to last me till my last day on earth.
Reading different posts, sounds like some oil is better for different things.
I have syn3 in all holes. Bike is a noisy little bastard
I have been around since before the AMF days of the leaking leaks
but I am a rider, not a fixer
I just want this to run fine and last forever
Have screaming eagle stage 1 with download and rineharts.
I did put an HD oil cooler on it
all help will greatly be appreciated, and probably be put in use, unless I am told to stick my thumb up my *** and jump up and down on one leg
thanks
Joe
First of all, the bike is probably going to be a noisy little bastard regardless of what fluids you run. Personally, I run full synthetic fluids and Syn3 is not full synthetic. Also, the tranny needs something better than just engine oil. It works better with gear oil. As for the primary, HD primary oil is fine for that hole. For engine oil I use either Amsoil or Redline. For the tranny I strictly use Redline Shockproof gear oil This is just another "oil thread" and you will get a 1000 different opinions.
thank you santajim
my bike runs hot, and the syn 3 seemed a little thin, and I figure with the heat it would thin down more. You living in Arizona is a good person for info. You deal with heat related problems often I figure. I will look into it. Thanks
I was under the impression from the HD people that syn 3 was full synthetic.
Mr hog
Now I remember reading about Amsoil or Mobil 1 for engine oil, and Redline for the tranny. Have no idea about the primary. Didn't even know HD had a primary oil.
I put Syn 3 in all holes because that is what the HD people told me to use. I know people on here are HD mechanics or car mechanics and enthusiasts, and seem to be better informed
I thank you all, and I guess I should have used the search engine. I will do that now
thanks

Well you're not likely to ever find any real data that compares long term power train longevity using different oils. Having said that most will agree synthetic oils are superior. I personally have not been a fan of one oil in all three holes. I'm not saying it won't work only that to function in the 3 completely different applications it is without question a compromise lubricant. I personally think Harley came out with Syn3 to make folks new to the brand coming from the imports think it's simple just like unitized engines. Anyway if you do want to run only one oil I'd use a high quality full synthetic not Syn3. If you're open to using multiple oils any dedicate transmission oil is better than engine oil. I just so happen to use Redline Heavy Duty with shock proof. When I had Syn3 in the transmission finding neutral was a PITA. No more. As far as the primary is concerned Syn3 seemed to work fine as far as clutch feel. I did switch to a dedicated Redline primary fluid because I figured with all the compensator issues being thrown about I'll take all the potential protection I can get.
I figured I would get some comments by asking what goes in what holes,
but I wasn't expecting a comment like that.
Thought some idiots might say something of a sexual nature
I am only looking for some good solid information
sorry if I offended you
I thought even some holy rollers out there would get a little laugh
Not offended here.Maybe I spoke out of line. You said it had to last until the last day you were on this earth.I was just wondering if it had to last 10 yrs or 50..
