Default Checking/Adding air to rear spoked wheel

Hi all,

The placement of the valve on my 2012 RKC rear tire is right between the spokes in the center of the rim, not to mention it is also very short.

The end result is usually letting a lot of air out while I try to check it and then finally over filling and letting air out to the desired pressure.

Entire process is about laying on the ground and usually takes (me) about 10 - 15 minutes. I just don't think it should be this difficult.

I am thinking Harley could have done a slightly better job of placement for this valve like on the front tire which is on the side of the rim.

Anyone have any tips/tricks for how they check air on these tires or gizmos that help? Anyone add an extender or elbow?

Thanks!

I use this

http://www.harley-davidson.com/store...stem-extension

I have a street glide so no spokes, but it really helps reaching that rear valve stem

Ditto to the extension. Works equally well on the mag wheel on my Road King as well as the spoked rim on my Wide Glide.

When I check the air in my tires I take the time to look the tire over for damage as well. So I lift the bike on a jack, remove the bags and spin the wheel. Getting that Shraeder valve in just the right position makes all the difference.

I've found that with the bike on the jack and sitting straight up and down with the valve rotated to the 9 o'clock position looking at the right side of the bike, is the easiest.

If I'm not inspecting the rear tire, I still remove the right bag while,it's on the jiffy stand and roll the bike to position the valve at the 9 o'clock position.

The only problem I ever have then is deciding whether I position it at the A.M. Or the P.M. Position. ;-)

Another here with the same story, I use the extension. Still a PITA, but much better than not having it.

A 90 degree gauge makes it pretty easy.

That's the best solution IMHO. I wouldn't ever again leave a 90 degree extension on the valve, having had a rubber valve stem split, while on tour. We didn't know until after being rescued what the cause was, as I couldn't find any evidence of a puncture - there wasn't one, but the tyre beads had come off the rim, so we weren't going anywhere!
