If you adjust the tune where the tune, in and of itself, causes damage, i.e. burning a hole in a piston due to **** poor tune, that damage will not be covered.
This argument/conversation is constantly showing up ... Be assured that anything that you add to your scooter will NOT void the warranty unless the addition of parts can be determined to directly have caused the failure of a warranty covered component. for example you put a tuner on your scooter and the transmission fails you're covered.
Yep, you better have deep pockets for the lawyers to go this route. I work in the industry and seen this game played before and never works out....just sayin.
owners will find that the person selling a product will often represent that it won;t cause problems.
However your Warranty is with Harley-Davidson, nobody else ( not even a dealer) can alter the terms of that warranty- which each of us get when we buy a bike.
this really comes down to the phrase we use so often in the USA "Personal Responsibility".
IF the owner thinks they know better how to mix air and fuel and adjust spark timing than the company who hired engineers designers builders etc how to make a motor run- then their conviction of the Personal Responsibility concept should guide their actions.
here is a quote from a pal who is SM at a dealership:
"Putting on pipes and air cleaners is a grey area. We've read the fine print on the warranty and it says " installing certain exhaust systems MAY void your warranty", but it doesn't tell you which ones! Go down to your local HD dealer and ask them a bunch of questions. I tell my customers, if you bought the bike here and we installed the parts, we will stand behind your warranty."
my dealer said it would have to proved the tuner was responsible for the damage --
This. If you install any after market component and then it can be proved that any damage was caused by that component, then a warranty claim can be denied. If you install a tuner on a new bike then a month later the inner primary bearing goes bad, you won't have a problem. But if a month later, you have a problem directly related to Air/Fuel mixture being off... You may have a battle ahead of you and HD has bigger lawyers than you do.
You want to mess with your tuning on your bike then blame Harley when it goes wrong. I modify my Harleys more than most and would never go to the dealer expecting them to warranty something that I altered in the powertrain.
I see this all the time in the automotive industry. Someone puts a aftermarket air intake and exhaust on a vehicle then blames the vehicle manufacturer for drivability issues. 9 times out of 10 its either a problem with the installation or the product itself.
I done a stage 1 and 2 within the 1st 600 miles and figured it she blows there is a good chance it might be one me, I accept that. It's not something I lose sleep over.
Tranny fails, electrical issue etc. I figure it would be a none issue getting warranty.

I'm with you on that, I see it also, guy puts monster tires and body lift on his new truck and blames us when driving in a strong head wind at 75mph it won't shift into 6th gear. Same with tuners on diesels.
many of you remember a year or so ago that a biker wanted Harley to warranty his powertrain problems. He flew a good sized flag behind his trike which produced a tremendous amount of drag -- they denied it -- and many got into an uproar over it and thought that a Harley could be able to pull a flag since they sold flags and mounts that are about 12" long. not 4 or 5 feet. Of course every one was thinking that they were denying a claim based on the small flag not the big one he was flying.

Define contradiction of terms.

Bullshit.
I've ran tuners, and before that, re-jetted carbs for years and years.
