im retired now and been curious to some options(took a week to defrost riding to daytona). Are there any auto trains? I hate to admit I might be at a point in my life where I need a trailer.Others have suggested have it shipped half way , not any less cost it seems.

Amtrak runs an Auto Train from Lorton, VA (south of DC) to Sanford, FL (north of Orlando). I used it in Jan to go down to FL for a 2 week trip. No problems with the trip and it was reasonably priced that time of year. I was the only bike on the way down and back. But as it got closer to bike week they were sold out.
Heading for Sturgis.... August... called at least 5 different shippers... I am a retired trucker so I have a bit of experience related.... so far, the best deal and also one of the least expensive... www.haulbikes.com is probably the one I will use... www.doortodoortransport.com was a bit cheaper but could not guarantee everything I had to have... from southcentral Virginia to Rapid City; to a warehouse located there... and return... out on the 3rd. back on the 10th.... $948.00. bonded and insured...
Not too bad... doortodoor wanted $795.00 but would not give me a definite ship date or time... kept telling me to call back.
Also called www.keyboardmotorcycleshipping.com ... pricing about the same... just under $1000.... but could not lock down the dates I needed... but seemed to be a very reputable outfit...
Any experiences with either of these???? would be helpful... thanks.

Reason: added info
My bike just arrived to CA frim MA(2 weeks) via Federal Transport for the second consecutive year. Great company to deal with, reasonable cost and bike can ship fully loaded/packed and no crating necessary. I used Haul Bikes for a cross country ship a few years back. Good comoany, no issues, but I felt the transit time is ridiculously long...greater than 4 weeks! Not willing to part with my bike for that long.
Im looking at shipping my 13 Heritage from Denver Colorado to just south of Orlando Florida.
Haul bikes quoted me $833.00 which I did not think was bad.

Safersys.org. Go to company snapshot and see if these guys even have a US Dot #, operating authority etc. There are a lot of em out there hauling bikes with no credentials, insurance etc. If they don't have a US Dot # and an MC # (authority to haul for hire) I wouldn't do business with them. That's just my opinion.
I used FEDERAL to transport my 2011 FLHTK from LYALL Il. to LA where it got put on a ship to Australia. In 2012 cost was $650 (USD),included original exhaust, packed separately.
My contact then at Federal was "Mary" (800-747-4100).
Service was 100%,important when doing everything by Inet from the other side of the planet.Have NO hesitation in recommending them.
Only problem I had was with the "convicts" over here in OZ who souvenired some items which were in the Bags;Intercom/original air cleaner cover, original mirrors (I had upgraded items fitted by dealer),my fault, should have arranged separate shipping for the loose bits, they say you are supposed to live and learn. FEDERAL treated my bike as I would have. Good luck.
