I agree the Sporty is not the best bike for Newbies... But when the Wife ( never rode) said riding a Harley being her bucket list a year ago March , she got a 1200 sporty and I got the heritage ( both used). After 2000 miles she tried the Heritage and we made the call right then for a Deluxe... She never missed a beat. Yes we lost $400 on the sporty, but I think it was worth it... By the way, I traded in the Heritage for a Road King and after putting on 8,000 miles, got $700 more than I paid for it. I think we are set NOW!!!
To Skullcap.... Take the class , and enjoy the baby steps you take along the way!
Feel like I have a different thinking than all the other post so...
I started out on dirt than ricer bikes followed by a 09 sportster 1200N and now have me a 14 SG. While I don't think it matters what you learn on as much as what you can afford to learn on (I didn't start on a touring and glad I didn't my sporty is still my favorite bike). I think you should get a bike that fits your needs.
Like others said dropping a HD touring bike is a lot more costly than a smaller bike, but chances are this wont be your last bike either.
Congrats on the bike and the main thing is get out there and put miles on it and get comfortable in it.
Congrats on the new ride Skullcap. I started on a touring bike myself and never looked back. Take your time, be aware of your surroundings and always pay attention. You will do fine and love every minute.
