The speedo sensor is basically a magnet that attracts the small metal shavings from your transmission. you will find it on the right side of your bike behind the transmission cover, in between the oil fill spout and the end of the starter solenoid.

There is one cap screw holding it in place. Remove that and gently pry it up with a thin bladed screwdriver. Then clean the end off with a rag. Before reinserting the sensor, lube the o-ring with a bit of oil so it doesn't tear going into the case. If this doesn't solve your problem, just buy a new one and replace it. They are not overly expensive. I think mine was about $36.00 last summer. If you have to replace it, it is easier to just cut the wires by the sensor and pull them back through by the J-plug under your seat, than it is trying to snake that probe through the opening....piece of cake.

ditto to seahag...i had th esame issue a couple years ago. It tooke me 3 or 4 times of cleaning to ever get the sensor to work properly. TIP..spray a little wd40 on the rag before you clean the sensor. For some reason that helps the cleaning ....wd40 is good for everything.
