Hello, I have a 2013 Ultra Limited and I have a t-bag that i used with my Dyna that slid over the backrest. I can secure it with ratchet straps to the luggage rack but I am curious if anyone has any thoughts or bad experience in this area.
If you're riding single, think about putting it in the passenger seat behind you. i don't see why putting it on the tour pac would be a problem.....except that there is a load limit expressed that seems pretty low (probably for liability factors) . lash that puppy on and go for it.
I've used a cheap luggage set several times like you have stated. And he only issue I've had with it is it slide side-to-side nice and a while. Other than that, no issues.
Last fall I got the HD set (saved up my gift cards) and it fits so much better over the backrest pad and the luggage rack.
I purchased a Saddleman which sets in the passengers seat on my Ultra Limited. I alway ride solo so its a great place for storage and has a lower center of gravity than on top of the tour pack. Here is a link:
It should work but I would be concerned with putting very much weight up high. Try to keep your center of gravity as low as you can. A higher center of gravity will make it a little harder to handle especially after a long day on the road.
I strap a Saddlemen BR3400 on the seat behind me as well. For comfort I also installed the Kuryakyn Quick Adjust Tour-Pak Relocator to fine tune it as a backrest.
Two straps to the Tour Pak uprights between the Pak and the seat secure it nicely. I thought I would have to secure it to the rack as well but the armrests help plant it in place.
I would watch how much you put on the tour pak lid. The latches on mine have broken a couple of times on trips. I only had my rain gear strapped on the rack. The other time I had a folding lawn chair strapped to it. Lost at least one latch both times. The bottom cracked by a hinge also. This was the old (97) fiberglass pizza box. YMMV!!
i have a 13 ultra and i have strapped may different bags to the tour pak lid. never had any issues.but as said earlier if your passenger seat is available use that first. when we go to sturgis this year we are camping out. so i am going to be loaded down pretty good. i have done a test run of loading my bike up for the trip and it looks like on my tour lid is going to be our tent 2 tarps and the tarp poles. it all weighs about 18 lbs. i was able to ride all day with it on there and open and close the lid with it all strapped on. i held everything down with just bungee cords.
