I am getting ready to buy my first Harley next weekend. It's a 2009 Electra Glide Ultra Classic. It was previously owned by a Harley mechanic. There are no leaks anywhere and the cam tensioners have been replaced. The bike looks great and the dealer is very reputable. My only fear is that it has 77,000 miles. Now I know that these touring bikes are made for miles but is 77,000 too many? Like I said, the bike looks great and I'm getting a screaming deal, $9999. What do you guys think?

I've got 150,000 on mine and didn't even install my gear drive cams until 81,000 miles so to me there aren't many miles on it. But I work on my own bikes so at 100,000 miles I started replacing 'wear' items before they went south such as the fuel pump and filter, wheel and swing arm bearings and bushings, all the relays, etc etc. That would have been expensive if I'd had a shop do it. If you're willing to keep it up yourself, you've already saved the upcoming price a rebuild down the line.

Default a scream'n deal……. well..?

$10 grand … ? well, drop it about 2 grand ….. then scream.
All used bikes are a bit of an 'unknown' so just make sure you have the dollars to spend on upkeep after the sale. Every bike needs this (as has been stated) so buy what makes you happy and you can afford; both now and later..

Thanks for the advice. I say screaming deal because a 2009 Ultra Classic in this area goes for around $13k-$14k, so $10k seems pretty good.

KBB retail in my zip code is about $15k - KBB figures 5,000 miles a year = 30,000.
Is 77,000 too high? depends. with a used bike, you never really know how it was ridden no matter what someone tells you ("only rode to church on sundays by a 70 year old grandmother"). I traded a HD once with 75,000 miles and the dealer sold it in 3 days.
one way to look at it - the bike has survived 77,000 miles so must be a good one.

if you are able to wrench that bike yourself then its a good deal, but if you are going to have a mechanich (wheter at the harley store or an indy place) do any work you are spending way too much money. just my opinion...

Personally I would look into the reputation of the mechanic and records. Some mechanics are very good and some I would not go near with a 10 foot pole. 77K sounds okay for the price. Plenty of bikes out there with a lot more miles. Buddy has an 09 Ultra with 135K and has only had a couple of fixes, mostly covered under ESP and warranty. Let your conscience be your guide.

NADA here is $14,800 and says approx mileage should be around 50000. They give about 8500 miles per year. So it's not that far off. I could get something a few years older with less miles for about the same price. I just wanted to know how experienced Harley guys felt about the mileage. Thanks.

That many miles, too much money.

I'm not scared of those miles, especially if you're good with a wrench and can read a service manual.

But I wouldn't give 10k for it.

I don't care what NADA says, or even KBB, they're just guidlines.
