Lately I've been having an issue with my '07 Electra Glide Classic. Occasionally when riding (happened once on a 130 mile trip today) the bike's speedometer will drop to zero and if I pull in the clutch the engine dies. If I shut the ignition completely off and then turn it back on, it initializes normally. After restarting, the speedometer and idle work perfectly. I checked for codes and it set s PO505 code when this happens.
Seems that it can be about a million different things, but what is the most common failure? Dirty/failing VSS? IAC? ??? I need to know where to begin checking, given these symptoms. The bike performs flawlessly the rest of the time - normal power, MPG, acceleration, etc. As always, thanks for your help.
I would definately start with cleaning the VSS and make sure wiring connection to sensor is clean and secure. If that doesn't do it,the VSS could be bad.
Update: Well, I rode it another 40 miles today, and 35 of them were without any incident. However, I had an issue twice in the last 5 miles. While I was stopped at a light, when I accelerated again I had no speedometer whatsoever. The bike continued to run normally, except with no speedometer reading. It appeared to set another code as well but I haven't read it yet. I tried an experiment by just shutting off the main switch and restarting. It restarted and ran fine but still with no speedometer reading. If I used the kill switch to shut it down, then turn off the main, and then restart, the bike started fine and the speedometer resumed function. I'm inclined to try cleaning the VSS. I just wanted to be reasonably sure that was a good place to start since my manual states that the starter motor must be removed to gain access to the VSS.
Had same issue with my 07 RK it was the speed sensor pick up in the tranny. Some times they get dirty .I checked the wires and changed tranny fluid all was good. You could pull the sensor and clean it off I think. I never had to pull mine.
vss acts up the 6th geer light goes out, auto turn signal shut off stops,if cruise control that stops, odo stops, dont think it affects idle or engine at all and so ive been told by a tech.
mine cut out for a few miles with 58k miles on it so picked up one of these.
The VSS is located under the starter on the transmission. If you have the stock exhaust it will be a bit of a job getting to it. If you plan to pull it, I would replace it rather than just cleaning it. Its not that expensive as I changed mine chasing a cruise control problem (the VSS was not the problem).
