Why is it that the light comes on when I am only half way threw the 6 gallons of fuel? going to change the speedo next week to the one with the tach in it. will that help?

interesting... mine comes on when I have 1 gallon left in the tank. So i know that I have at least 30 miles left...
Not sure if a new speedo will help, others may chime in.
Mine will often come on with 2+ gallons left in the tank. I assume it happens when the ignition is turned on while the bike is still leaning on the kick stand giving a false reading. Unfortunately once the light is on it will not turn off. So I rely more on my trip meter, (which I reset every time I fuel) than I do the "dummy low fuel light".

turtlspd - mine does that too, noticed a few weeks back. I like your work around for the "dummy low fuel light" - i will be sure to reset my trip meter each time i fuel up now. I've done a bit of work to my 09 SG (stage II) and I get about 150 miles before the light comes on when riding (not on the stand).
thats impressive!!!!! by Street Glide can only dream of that mileage with my wrist on the throttle
Not all that impressive. Most of that is the high altitude. Couple of years ago my wife and I did Colorado. I got 53mpg at one point. 34+/- is normal for me in East Texas.
