I went the week before sturgis a couple of years back no bikes few cars had the place to ourselves. Spearfish canyon is a must ride not far to devils tower from spearfish. Needles highway is fun riding and taking pics in the roads cut into the rock. I am sure there is alot of great riding off the beaten path as well!! On the way out we saw several rvs with trailers full of bikes (Friday) before the rally. It was great riding no crowds but the temps where hot!!!!! when we left on got on the big boring haighway home it was 116 degrees. Good thing I had a liquid cooled bike at the time.

Thansk for everyone's insight. I'm considering going up before the rally and taking in the sights before the rally starts, maybe going on opening day for a couple hours to pick up a t-shirt or three, and then heading home. Does anyone know what the best/must see roads are?
Again, I really appreciate everyone's input on this. Thanks and ride safe.
The wife told me two years ago that I could pick where we went for our next vacation. I said Sturgis! She swallowed hard and said okay. Still trying to get that to happen[:@] I have that week off this year and wanted to go. Wife says it's our 20th and she want's to go to a resort in the bahamas. So we compromised and are going to go ride the Tail of the Dragon and kick around there. Maybe next year
Went in 2004 and 2005. 2005 we went up at the begining at it was packed. In 2004 we went up towards the last and it wasnt as bad as far as crowds. Either way it is something you have to take in. Even for someone that doesnt like crowds, like myself, I had a blast lots of great people to meet and a lot of nice rides in the area. We stayed in Rapid City and the first year I got a room at the last min. You could try them, I think they hold back some rooms. Super 8 605-342-4911. Its right at the base of Rushmore Road.
We might be going through at the time of the rally but not staying, maybe heading for Montana this year.

Went last year the week before and it was not as busy as the week of however still hard to find a place to park the bike. Lots of people and everything was open. Rides were great although there were plenty of bikes on the road. One of the best times I've spent out there as the crowds were managable.
