I read somewhere that if you think the compensator is bad to hold the front brake and act like going to due a burn- out!
If it doesn't clunk under throttle the comp is good, and it's probably the starter clutch making noise on start up. Anyone have thoughts on this? Thanx

Don't give it throttle like trying to do a burn out. Just hold the front brake and ease out on the clutch. And it won't be a clunk if it's bad it'll be a clatter.
thanx for the reply. in your opinion, on a hot start would you say it's probably the starter clutch if no clatter from primary when letting out clutch?

On hot starts, mine made a loud meshing/metallic sound. I did the starter clutch first, but no luck. Pulled the compensator and it looked like very minimal wear. I installed the new SE version and my problem is solved. Another bonus is how much easier it is to find neutral. I didn't realize it was hard to find until now! So much better!

This is it in a nutshell...Your compensator will start to fail long before the average rider ever notices it. When the comp starts going back it will allow kickback from compression during starting. A good, strong starter will push through this with no problem. Over time it takes its toll on your starter clutch and that's when you begin to hear the grind on hot start ups. So the the reality of it is, yes the starter clutch is bad and needs replacing, but the bad compensator is the root of the problem.
I just wanted to add that I was 100% sure it was my starter bendix, but once disassembled, there was nothing wrong with it. The compensator was the problem.
On mine 2009 ultra with 22000 miles when hot I made a lot of grinding and banging damage the clutch basket ring gear ,starter, due to bad compensater tuned in 2000$ to fix had se compensater put in fyi start like it should now!!
New starter clutch on Saturday ( all *****) kept running against ring gear. 3 times in & out! Finally left ball out & it works like a champ. Hot starts no problem anymore.
