New starter clutch on Saturday ( all *****) kept running against ring gear. 3 times in & out! Finally left ball out & it works like a champ. Hot starts no problem anymore.
So now that you've got the starter clutch fixed I'll pose this question for you....Lets say your riding on a 2 lane highway and your behind a vehicle and your waiting for a break to pass. In the meantime your feathering the throttle back and forth a little maintaining your speed. Do you ever notice "slack" in your driveline between getting off then back on the throttle? If you haven't noticed it pay attention the next time you ride. That "slop" as I like to call it, is caused by a worn compensator.

Thanks for that bit of info, something to listen out for while I still have 2 yrs left on my ext warranty!!!!
Couldn't that also be caused by a primary chain out of adjustment? But I think I will replace my comp soon anyway. Thanks again.
Yes it could but when your having starter troubles as you were it almost always derives from a failing comp. Granted there are cases where the starter just goes bad but it's rare.

Bates: I think I have noticed this in my bike. Is it conceivable that I'd have a worn comp on a 2012 RG with 30K miles on it? I have no starter problems, FWTW.
Rubber guy got your message and bad comp, bad starter for sure ring gear was on the edge but for 600 $ replaced whole unit new clutch, spings, bearings , gear since I was into it that deep for peace of mind!!

Yessir it's absolutely conceivable. Only one way to know for certain and that's pull the cover. But...even then it may be hard to tell.

Valuable input. Thank you. I checked Baker's website this afternoon to find out that they're going to be in Sturgis, so I'm going to be paying very close attention over the next couple of weeks; if it feels like you desicribe I am going to see about having a baker put in while I'm there.

Thanks for this, I have this on my '14 Limited, been to 2 dealers who tell me it's normal. My Indy mechanic says the new bikes have an automatic chain tensioner that will allow the chain to loosen quite a bit before it adjusts, he said the loose chain is making all that noise, the "slap". I'm changing the primary oil to Redline in hopes of quieting things down a bit, the noise is a real PIA.
