Gonna be heading to Nashville tn from Pennsylvania in August with the wife . I'm looking for a navigation app to keep me from traveling on highways . What are your experiences with these apps ? Don't really wanna down the money on a motorcycle specific gps as I have the life proof case and handlebar mount for this case. Thanks
Garmin has a StreetPilot app for iPhone and Windows phone. I've never used their app but if it's as good as their purpose built GPS units it may be worth a look.
I used Sygic from IL to TN last August and it worked great. best part is the maps are stored on your phone not downloaded as you need them. no data = no gps if your using google maps. obviously you need room on your phone though.. roughly 2 gigs if i recall correctly.
It's tough to beat Google Maps. I've tried alot of them but keep going back to what I'm comfortable with. We just got back from 8 days through VA, NC & TN and I used it the whole time. You don't even need leave the map screen up the whole time as the directions as you get close to your turn will just pop up no matter what screen your on or when phone is in sleep mode. Avoid highways will work well but not having compared the 2 I'm not sure if the results are comparable to other systems plotting "scenic" routes.
If your making long runs with screen lit up to display the route or turn by turn make sure you're plugged in to a power source or it will drain the battery pretty fast.
I use navmii. You can down load the maps for the states that you need right to the phone and it doesn't use data. It will also play music stored on the phone through the app and mute it when the NAV is giving directions. Been using this same app for a couple years now. It has an avoid freeway and toll road setting as well. The only down fall is you can't do way points. Just put in a single destination and it calculates the route. It does have a search function the will use data to find address or places that will use data while searching but not while running the GPS.
Oh yeah it's free so you can give it a try and see if you like it.
Google maps needs a cell service connection to work completely. It cannot dynamically route you without it, for routing is done by their server, not your phone. The displayed may is only the area right around you. Travel long enough without cell signal and you will drive off the edge of the displayed map.
So just be aware of this when wandering around remote back roads in the mountains. I like it and use it myself, but quite frequently run into these two problems with it when back in the hills and hollers.
Secondary roads from PA to TN you are going to hit long stretches of cell phone dead spots in WV, KY. Might want to have some old fashion pencil and paper plans as a back up.
